I’m grateful to newspaper editors who feel that a couple of inverted commas can stand in for the word ‘alleged’ when writing their headlines. It’s so much easier to be morally outraged by “ TOP COP IN ‘PAEDOPHILE’ SHAME” than by the more convoluted “SENIOR POLICEMAN FACES INDECENCY ENQUIRY”.
